For over 50 years, AP Racing has had one aim - to create winners on the race track. The world of motorsport has changed out of all recognition since those early days and AP Racing have spearheaded every major development in brake and clutch technology. In Grand Prix Racing our success started with the incredible Auto Unions and has continued uninterrupted ever since to the championship winning Williams, McLarens, Renaults, and Ferraris. Over the years this success has been repeated in all other types of Single Seaters including Champ Cars, Indy Racing League, Indy Lights, GP2, F3000, F3 etc. At the end of the 2011 season AP Racing had notched up an incredible 686 GP wins for cars using its Brakes and/or Clutches and are confident of increasing this tally in 2012. At the pinnacle of motor sport, numerous factors dictate the most specialised requirements for ultimate success. From the state of the art 3 dimensional solid modelling/design and Finite Element Analysis CAD facilities, to sophisticated research, development and testing incuding special dynamometers that simulate true racing speeds, AP Racing is constantly probing the boundaries of technology. From state of the art measuring centres, CNC machining and sophisticated stock control systems, to the intricate hand assembly, checking and testing of individual assemblies, AP Racing ensures its products perform when pushed to the absolute limits.
J-Hook design Rotors
AP Racing and STILLEN introduced the J-Hook rotor to the general public in 2009 with the Nissan R35 GT-R. The release of the J-Hook pattern brought the benefits of a cross drilled and slotted rotor with none of the drawbacks. AP Racing has been using the J-Hook finish on the professional racing circuits for years and decided that it was time to bring this technology to the streets.
J-HOOK PATTERNED ROTORS ARE IMMUNE TO DRILLED ROTORS PROPENSITY TO FORM SPIDER CRACKS UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE DURING HEAVY USE.
Finally, the J-Hook finish retains all of the benefits of a traditional slotted rotor in that it cleans the pad surface and allows the pad to outgas through the recessed channels. Outgassing is when the temperature built up during the friction process cooks the gases out of the brake pad that could create a buffer between the pad and rotor which would be trapped in between the rotor and pad. By slotting the rotor face you are allowing the pad to releases these gases.
The only potential drawback to a J-Hook rotor is that the passing of the J-Hook design through the pad can cause a light whirring sound that some customers might find to add character to the vehicle and braking system while some customers might find to be a bit distracting.
Cross-Drilled / Slotted 2-Piece Rotors
There are many good reasons why cross-drilled and slotted rotors have been recognized as the highest performing brake rotors available. Quite simply, they are. The cross-drilled holes aid in cooling and allowing the rotor to breath while at the same time add additional bite between the rotor and pad. When manufacturing a cross-drilled slotted rotor it is extremely important that the rotor be designed to be finished with this pattern. This means the drilled holes must line up with the internal cooling vanes so as to not affect the overall structure of the rotor. |
