Steering Wheel Position Sensor or Steering Shaft Lower Bearing Replacement Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• Air bag deployment
• Personal injury
• Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines: • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
• If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement . Remove the following from the steering shaft: Steering shaft seal (4) Sensor retainer (3) Steering wheel position sensor (2), refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering . Adapter and bearing assembly (1) Installation Procedure
Install the following to the steering shaft: adapter and bearing assembly (1) Important: The steering shaft assembly must be rotated to the 12 o'clock position.
Sensor assembly (2), refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering . Sensor retainer (3) Steering shaft seal (4) Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement . Enable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
Steering Column Replacement Removal Procedure
Tools Required J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin
Important: If the steering column connectors are disconnected with the ignition in the ON position, the BCM will enter a fail enable mode and prevent steering column lock operation. The PCM will also inhibit vehicle motion by disabling fuel. To clear the BCM fail enable mode, disconnect the BCM fuse #25 for 15 seconds.
Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left to gain access to the upper coupling bolt. Remove the upper coupling bolt. Turn the steering wheel back to the right until the wheels are in a straight ahead position and then lock the steering column. Install J 42640 to the steering column. Remove the steering wheel inflator module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Knee Bolster in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
Remove the driver knee bolster bracket. Refer to Bracket Replacement - Knee Bolster in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the instrument panel wiring harness.
Remove the nuts from lower steering column support plate (1).
Remove the upper steering column bracket nuts from the upper reinforcement assembly (3). Slide the steering column (2) off of the intermediate shaft. Remove the steering column (2) from the vehicle. Rotate the steering column clockwise as the bottom of the steering column reaches the reinforcement assembly. This will allow the telescoping steering column motor and the steering wheel position sensor room to clear the instrument panel brace. Installation Procedure
Position the steering column assembly (2) into the vehicle and insert the lower steering shaft assembly into the upper coupling of the intermediate shaft. Install the cross car locating bushing (1) on the right hand mounting stud. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the upper steering column bracket nuts to the upper reinforcement assembly (3).
Tighten Tighten the upper steering column bracket nuts to 24 N·m (17 lb ft).
Install the lower steering column support plate (1) nuts.
Tighten Tighten the lower steering column support plate nuts to 24 N·m (17 lb ft).
Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left to gain access to the upper coupling of the intermediate shaft.
Install the upper coupling bolt.
Tighten Tighten the upper coupling bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).
Connect all the electrical connectors (except the SIR) to the instrument panel wiring harness. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
Install the driver knee bolster bracket (1). Refer to Bracket Replacement - Knee Bolster in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console. Install the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Knee Bolster in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console. Install the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR. Perform the SIR Diagnostic System Check. Refer to A Diagnostic System Check - SIR in SIR. Perform the SWPS plausibility test. Refer to Steering Wheel Position Sensor Plausibility Test in ABS Brakes
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement Removal Procedure Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
Remove the screws (4) retaining the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (3) to the steering wheel. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (3) from the steering wheel. Disconnect the connector position assurance (1) from the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil electrical connector (2). Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the back of the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (3). Disconnect the horn wiring harness (6) from the steering column. Disconnect the ground wire (5) from the steering column. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (3) from the vehicle. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling, Shipping, and Scrapping . Installation Procedure
Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module retaining screws (2) into module.
Tighten Tighten the retaining screws to 6 N·m (54 lb in).
Connect the ground wire (5) to the steering column. Connect the horn wiring harness (6) to the steering column. Connect the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil electrical connector (2) to the back of the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (3). Install the connector position assurance (1) to the electrical connector (2). Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (3) onto the steering wheel by pushing on both the right and left sides of the module until the retaining screws snap into place. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System . |
