How Does It Work? In simple terms, an engine's ability to make power is directly proportionate to the amount of air and fuel that can be brought into the combustion chamber. Putting more fuel in is easy. It's like opening a faucet. On the other hand, getting extra air into the chamber is a more difficult matter, since it's essentially "drawn" in. A supercharger increases the displacement or "blows" more air into the engine. This is called "forced induction," and it's widely used in racing, aviation and industry to extract maximum power from internal combustion engines.
