Early Buyers of the 2014 Corvette Stingray Ordering Z51 and Magnetic Ride Control

TITLE

For just $2,800 more, about three-fourths of the people lucky enough to be buying a 2014 Corvette Stingray are checking the box for the Z51 package.

And while they’re at it, about half of the folks who choose the Z51 are also going for the Magnetic Ride Control suspension, too. The all-new 7-speed manual transmission, which includes specific close-ratio gearing for more aggressive driving, is likewise an early hit.

That’s not really surprising considering that Chevy has said all along it expected early purchasers to go all out on the option list before the rush settles down and folks “settle” for fewer options.

The numbers are even higher for the hard-core Corvette enthusiast. An analysis of the first 100 orders placed by Corvette Forum members shows that 81% ordered the Z51 package. 67% of buyers also have the Magnetic Selective Ride Control and a whopping 93% of the orders have the NPP Performance Exhaust. Those that have ordered the Z51 package are also overwhelming selecting the MSRC as well with a take rate of 85%.

So what are these Z51 buyers getting for the extra money?

Well, the first things you’ll notice are the unique rear spoiler, brake-cooling ducts, and additional air deflectors for enhanced track capability, but the package is so much more than that.

The base Corvette Stingray rides on new 18 x 8.5-inch front and 19 x 10-inch rear wheels, but the Z51 rolls on 19 x 8.5-inch front and 20 x 10-inch rear forged aluminum wheels. New Michelin Pilot Super Sport run-flat tires developed specifically for the seventh-generation Corvette deliver comparable levels of grip than the wider tires of previous models. As a result, the track-oriented Corvette Stingray with the Z51 Performance Package is capable of 1g in cornering acceleration – comparable to the 2013 Corvette Grand Sport. Significantly, that is achieved with narrower and lighter wheels and tires. The reduced “footprint” reduces rolling resistance, steering effort and road noise, contributing to a more nimble feel, more immediate steering response and greater touring comfort and efficiency.

The Z51 also includes 45mm-piston Bilstein dampers for more aggressive body control and track capability as well as dry-sump oiling system and a better cooling system.

Also featured on the Z51 is an electronic limited-slip differential, or ELSD, which continuously makes the most of the torque split between the rear wheels. The system features a hydraulically actuated clutch that can infinitely vary clutch engagement and can respond from open to full engagement in tenths of a second. It shifts torque based on a unique algorithm which factors in vehicle speed, steering input and throttle position to improve steering feel, handling balance and traction.

You also get better brakes – dual-cast, slotted 13.6-inch (345 mm) front rotors and 13.3-inch (338 mm) slotted rear rotors. They have 6 percent more swept area than the previous-generation Grand Sport and are cooled front and rear for improved track capability. Consequently stopping distance is improved 5 percent.

It all adds up to some impressive numbers for the Z51, which can go from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds and do the quarter-mile in 12 seconds.

What isn’t different about the Z51 is the engine, which remains the same 6.2-liter V8 that serves up 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque in the base Stingray.

But who’s complaining?

If you’re planning on joining the ranks of new Corvette Stingray owners, we’ve got some required reading for you to download. Chevrolet has issued the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s owners manual as well as a Quick Reference Guide so new owners will be able to bone up on all the information contained.

The Quick Reference Guide covers certain functions on the Stingray including the Instrument Panel, Keyless Entry System, the new Chevrolet MyLInk Infotainment System and other important operations. One of the more interesting sections covers the Instrument Cluster and how to reconfigure the cluster to access the sub-menus and tailor the displays to your preferences.

The full-color Guide also outlines the MyChevrolet and OnStar mobile apps that are available on the iPhone or Android smartphone platforms. You’ll be able to start the new Corvette with your smartphone as well as access a variety of vehicle information.

As far as the Owner’s Manual goes, it’s your bible in terms of all the functions and recommended practices for safely operating the new Corvette. Some may read it cover to cover while others will just stash it inside the glove box until needed. We recommend at least a cursory review to help you get the most out of the car as possible.

NHTSA Upgrades Investigation into 2005-2007 Corvette Headlights

And then there was…no light?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this week that it is expanding its probe into complaints that low-beam headlights have suddenly quit working on some C6 Corvettes.

The investigation started in May after NHTSA received 30 reports that both low-beam headlights stopped operating at night without warning.

Since then, NHTSA has reviewed 95 complaints and reports from owners, mainly concerning 2005-07 Corvettes though there have been four cases reported in 2008 models. Now, the agency will be doing what it calls an “engineering analysis” that could lead to a recall if the investigation proves it to be warranted.

GM is cooperating with the investigation and says the problem is caused by a wire in the electrical center similar to a fuse box that can break because its location in a hot area near the engine makes it susceptible to stress.

However, no technical service bulletins have been issued, and GM told NHTSA in June that warranty claims related to the problem have been “extremely low.” The issue would be covered by warranty for the first 36,000 miles or three years.

GM says that the high beams and fog lights continue to operate, allowing a driver to still use the car until it is fixed. The automaker told NHTSA that the “rate of inoperative headlights does not present an unreasonable risk to vehicle safety” and that it knows of no crashes or injuries caused by the problem.

But that doesn’t make the issue any less real to the few Corvette owners who have suddenly been affected by it.

That includes one Arizona man who reported his low-beams went off in 2011, “placing me in the dark and almost caused a wreck. I drove the rest of the way with my high beams.”

Another driver told NHTSA that when his lights went out, he ran over a discarded tire as he tried to pull the road. Others said the problem is intermittent, which is even more annoying, and some have said that their low-beams came back on later, usually after the car had been parked.

The investigation will include a total of 103,374 2005-07 models.

Brand new plate, fantastic rate

Aug 28, 2013: While dealers are expecting to see plenty of interest in Chevrolet’s fresh and funky model range in one of the car industry’s busiest months of the year, the interest won’t be on the finance packages – at least not for retail customers looking to buy a Spark, Aveo, Cruze or Orlando.

Car and Driver: 2016 Corvette Z07 Spy Photos

Car and Driver: 2016 Corvette Z07 Spy Photos

Yes, we said Z07!

Car and Driver Magazine has obtained what may be the first official spy photos of the next high performance Corvette model. While the Z06 moniker is expected among Vette enthusiasts since that’s what it was called in both C5 and C6 configurations, Car and Driver says historical RPO codes be damned and believe GM will call it the Z07 since this is the seventh generation Corvette.

The Z07 RPO has been used several times since it first appeared as an off-road suspension package from 1973-75 and it returned for C4 Corvettes from 1991-95 as an adjustable-suspension package. It was last used on C6 Z06 Corvettes as the “Ultimate Performance Package” starting with the Carbon Edition in 2011 and ending with C6 Z06 production in 2013.

Hmmm, the Ultimate Performance Package has a nice ring to it…

Longtime Car and Driver technical editor Don Sherman believes the high performance C7 will be outfitted with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and larger Michelin tires. He also believes Chevy will make a departure from supercharges and turn to turbo charging a smaller displacement engine to produce power in the neighborhood of 600 horsepower. Sherman points to the new Cadillac Elmiraj concept coupe which touts 500-hp out of a 4.5-liter twin-turbo V8 as an example. Finally, Sherman believes the Z07 will be offered exclusively with the Tremec TR-6070 seven-speed transmission, despite the coming of the new eight-speed Hydra-Matic auto transmission that will be available to Corvette at that time.

What we don’t agree with Sherman in the Car and Driver report is that he believes the pricing of the high performance Z07 will be in the neighborhood of $100,000 as opposed to the C6 Z06s starting price of $76,000. We hope that Chevy remains cost-conscious to its customers and that the new Z06/Z07 model will start in the $75,000-$80,000 range which is where a fully loaded all-optioned 2014 Corvette Stingray ends.

Car and Driver expects the new Z07 model to come in 2015 as a 2016 model year car. We’re holding out hope that the the new Corvette Z07 would be a 2015 model as originally thought but if they turn to turbocharging instead of supercharging, I can see why additional development time would be needed. A delay of another year would also give Chevy the opportunity to saturate the market with the base Stingray models before giving customers a choice of additional models.

Make sure you head over to Car and Driver to read the entire report and see all the spy photos.
